In early 2018, Glorious Games Group worked on a variety of casual and hyper-casual games. I worked on the narrative design for Friendling: a social sim game. The premise was similar to that of a dating app where you chat with someone to see if there’s a connection, but geared toward making a friend rather than a potential love match. At the time, it was a novel concept, though nowadays, you can see romantic versions in the app stores.

I designed the characters you as the player interact with, building their personalities and quirks along with their texting style. Additionally, I crafted the various responses you would select to progress in each conversation. We tweaked each response to feel as natural as possible. Sometimes you would get the … typing bubble, which would lead to a response pretty quickly, but sometimes it would go away with nothing (so frustrating in real life!!). Sometimes it would say they were away and your mobile device would get a notification later that day when the character was ‘back’ and had responded. Each character had multiple potential endings you could unlock by the responses you selected as well as a ‘this isn’t working out’ ending and an ultimate-BFF ending. Designing the labyrinth for each character’s story arc based on the various responses was super-fun and challenging!
